Types of Paediatric Surgeries and Treatments
Open Heart Surgery: Heart surgeries in children are performed to repair heart defects (congenital heart defects) that the patients were born with. Although one surgery may not be enough to repair the heart defect, an open-heart surgery is often the prescribed procedure to fix the congenital heart defect. This procedure involves creating an incision through the breastbone (sternum) while the child is under anaesthesia. During the procedure, a heart-lung bypass machine is used to oxygenate and circulate blood, while the surgeon repairs the heart defect.
Minimally Invasive Surgery: Unlike open-heart surgeries, in a minimally invasive surgery, surgeons do not use a heart-lung bypass machine. Instead, an incision is made on one side of the chest and between the ribs. Often called a closed-heart surgery, it involves the use of a camera and special instruments to repair the congenital heart defect.
Spine Deformity Surgery: The need for spine deformity correction surgery depends on the severity of the spine’s curve and is often treated with procedures including spinal fusion and growing rods. The spinal fusion procedure involves removing the intervertebral disc and using bone grafts to promote stability and restrict movement between the vertebrae. Alternatively, growing rods are implanted to stabilise the spine without stopping its growth. The rods are designed to lengthen periodically as the child grows.
Paediatric Organ Transplants: Paediatric organ transplantation is a highly specialized field that demands expertise and a multidisciplinary approach. Indian paediatric transplant centres excel in procedures such as liver transplants, kidney transplants, and bone marrow transplants in children.
Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeries: India offers advanced orthopaedic surgeries for children with congenital abnormalities, traumatic injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders. Procedures like limb deformity corrections, scoliosis surgeries, and hip dysplasia treatments are performed by skilled paediatric orthopaedic surgeons. The integration of advanced imaging, minimally invasive techniques, and customized approaches ensures optimal outcomes and shorter recovery times for young patients.
Paediatric Oncology Treatments: India's paediatric oncology centres provide comprehensive care for children with cancer. From advanced chemotherapy regimens to targeted therapies and stem cell transplants, Indian paediatric oncologists offer a range of treatments for various paediatric malignancies.
